Police Chief Alan Murphy will continue to serve the community of Medicine Hat in his current capacity for another seven years.

The Medicine Hat Police Commission (MHPC) announced the extension during a meeting on Wednesday night.

Chief Murphy is set to lead the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) through to the end of 2031.

In a news release, the commission said that since his appointment in 2022, Chief Murphy has focused on strengthening local partnerships and enhancing community engagement.

Also highlighted was that his leadership has been key in developing a new police training partnership with Medicine Hat College and supporting youth mentorship through the First Responder Academy in collaboration with the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education.

Chief Murphy has also prioritized modernizing MHPS equipment and training, ensuring officers are well prepared to meet the evolving needs of the community.

“The commission took a careful and thoughtful approach in reviewing Chief Murphy’s contract,” said commission chair Paul Carolan in a statement.

“We believe his leadership has been instrumental in strengthening the relationship between the police service and our community,” he added.

“Extending his contract reflects our confidence in the direction he’s leading and our shared commitment to keeping Medicine Hat a safe and connected community.”

“Leading the MHPS and working with our community for the past three years has been an extremely rewarding experience,” said Chief Murphy in a statement.

“I am grateful for the dedication of our MHPS staff and the continued support of the Police Commission,” he added.

“I look forward to building on our progress and continuing to serve the citizens of Medicine Hat.”

The MHPC said it remains committed to working collaboratively with the Chief, his leadership team, and the residents of Medicine Hat to strengthen community safety and foster public trust.
