Councillor candidate Moritz says he will bring a strategic plan to Medicine Hat and not a wish list, if elected

Sep 29, 2025 | 12:15 PM

Immanuel Moritz is running for council in Medicine Hat to focus on city growth and homelessness as key priorities.

Moritz said the city needs short-term and long-term goals to be successful. He said he can bring strategic planning and not a wish list to council.

“You have to say, this is the plan, this is the date I want it done by, and were you successful? And if you weren’t successful, what are the consequences for that?” Moritz said.

Medicine Hat has a population problem, according to Moritz.

“We’re 65,000 people, we should be 80,000 people, and to get there, it’ll take us a long time,” Moritz said.

“We’ve been bypassed by Airdrie, and Strathcona County, St. Albert, [in population], so we have to change that.”

“Growth has gotta be the priority. If anybody’s not talking about growth, we’re gonna miss that opportunity [to grow],” he added.

Moritz said homelessness is an issue every community is facing.

“Truly we can’t, we can’t solve homelessness. Here in Medicine Hat, the trick is that we’re going to be compassionate,” Moritz said.

“We need to say, the citizens of Medicine Hat have a right to feel safe. We have to use our protective services, the police department, and try to work with them.”

Moritz ran for council in the previous election but has never been elected.

When Moritz was five-years-old, his parents immigrated to Medicine Hat.

Moritz is a small business owner in Medicine Hat and has worked in the construction industry his entire life.

“That construction background brings me some skills that we can use in city council,” Moritz said.

“Ultimately, construction is the biggest collaboration system in the world.”

“You get 20 different sub-trades, all working in their own way, in their own direction, with their own ideas, but in the end, we create a building,” he added.

City council and construction are similar, according to Moritz. He said both are a team of people doing different things to achieve the same goal.
