Businesses and public transit are priorities for Medicine Hat councilor candidate Monson

Medicine Hat councilor candidate Kevin Monson is focusing on supporting local businesses and public transit in the municipal election.

Monson says he is supporting local businesses for the benefit of hiring local residents in the city.

“Unemployment is kind of through the roof for everybody but specifically young people, and I think locally owned businesses that are started by Medicine Hat residents, is something that we should make a high priority,” Monson said.

Public transit is a priority for Monson because he wants to see more accessability for people in the city who don’t have another option for transportation.

“Longer wait times or unpredictable schedules or the route system isn’t quite as good. I think there’s a lot of things that transit could do, whether that be different hubs around the city,” said Monson.

“I think reducing the number of transfers should be a higher priority because I think that dissuades a lot of people from riding the bus.”

Another major priority for Monson is focusing on finding housing for renters.

“A lot of people in Medicine Hat are not so lucky rental wise. I’ve heard a lot of people in the community complain, whether that be pest issues or safety issues or common area maintenance issues,” he explained.

“There are things the city can do to help hold some of those larger landlords accountable that are not stepping up and providing their tenants with a dignified living situation.”

This is the first time Monson is running for council.

Monson’s primary reason for running is his love for the community and he wants to challenge himself.

“I like to be someone that tries something new and is not afraid to try new things,” said Monson.

“I care about this community, I do think I can do a lot of good. I’m a positive person that’s easy to work with, and I really think I’m a good learner and a good listener, and I think that’s something they need on council.”

Monson was born and raised in Medicine Hat and has been managing the Zipline and Adventure Park in Cypress Hills for 10 years.

The 34-year-old currently works at Medicine Hat College in the library and as a part-time instructor.

Monson said he is a positive guy who wants to bring that positivity and optimism into council.
