Sep 22, 2025 | 10:35 AM

Former Medicine Hat Mayor Ted Clugston will be seeking a councillor position in the city during the fall municipal election.

Clugston served on council for a 14 year period from 2007-2021. During that time he was mayor for an eight year period from 2013-2021.

He finished second in voting for mayor during Medicine Hat’s 2021 municipal election.

In a statement, Clugston said his decision to run again stems from a belief that his work for Medicine Hat is far from finished.

“Over the past four years, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect, grow, and reconnect with what matters most, our community,” Clugston said.

“I’m returning with a renewed sense of purpose and a deep commitment to Medicine Hat. I look forward to working collaboratively with the mayor and council to build a strong, vibrant future for our city.”

The key priorities listed in Clugston’s platform include collaborative leadership and council renewal, putting community first, and smart growth and economic resilience.

Clugston said in a statement, that he brings seasoned leadership to council, emphasizing shared goals and respectful collaboration.

Adding that his experience would ensure sound decision-making, helping prevent costly errors, and he would support new members through mentorship and institutional insight.

Clugston said he is committed to meaningful engagement with residents, and championing initiatives that reflect community values.

From expanding recreational facilities to enhancing infrastructure planning, Clugston said he aims to create vibrant spaces that support physical and mental well-being.

Tackling affordability and strengthening the future of the city by promoting responsible fiscal management and strategic investment in core services is also something he highlighted.

Clugston mentioned that he supports expanding the city’s tax base by streamlining processes for entrepreneurs and investors, to send a clear message that Medicine Hat is open for business.

He adds that a thriving business community means more jobs, innovation, and revenue to support housing, infrastructure, and public services, without overburdening residents.

“This is about smart, strategic development that puts people first and ensures Medicine Hat remains a place where families thrive, businesses grow, and opportunity is within reach for all,” said Clugston.

He officially registered for the election on Friday, Sept. 19.
