Video: Medicine Hat resident Christy Starling sets a world push up record

Twelve years ago Starling was involved in a car accident that left her with 12 screws, two plates and two rods in her left ankle. Because of this injury Starling does push ups with only one foot.

Starling had been training since March and said her hopes were high.

Even though Starling had set the record, she was hoping for 1,300 push ups for the $1,300 she had raised for FASD awareness.

“I thought, it’s 22 [push ups] a minute. But when you start getting out in the heat, plus 31 [degrees celsius], it’s a little challenging,” said Starling.

Starling said she fell in love with the training process and loves having something to work towards.

“To be able to raise money and also have a goal for myself is really awesome. I really feel good today about it,” said Starling.

“It means a lot when you have support. The more you have support, the more eager you are to do things. When you have support and others helping you through, it definitely helps the accomplishment.”

Starling’s coach, Alex Mejuto said he was very impressed with what she had done.

“I can’t even find the right words to describe how proud I am for pushing through all the way, not having any excuses, not just for today, but also for all the months of prep that she has been through,” said Mejuto.

“She never complained about anything. She went through all her workouts, regardless how much calories she was eating. She pushed all the way through, never complained a bit. And just beyond proud is what I would say.”

Starling now holds two world push up records after this event. She had previously broke the Guinness World Record for ‘most knuckle push ups in one minute,’ from 76 to 78 on Mar 9, 2025.
