Cypress County is moving its Box Springs Fire Station.

It’s spending $1.55 million to purchase land off the Trans Canada Highway for the station’s relocation after it was notified its current lease would not be renewed.

The new site is located at 13302 Range Rd. 65, about 10 minutes northwest of Medicine Hat, and a short drive from the fire station’s current location at 511 S. Railway Dr. N.E. in Redcliff.

Dan Hamilton, county reeve, said in a statement Monday that the purchase was about the future.

“Securing this location is about more than bricks and mortar — it’s about planning responsibly for the long-term needs of our residents,” Hamilton said.

“This investment supports our emergency services and operations today, while opening the door to further development opportunities in the future.”

The county said the new site offers increased visibility improved access and faster response times for its emergency services.

The site is positioned to accommodate future development opportunities due to its prime location along Highway 1, the county added.

The county takes possession of its new property on Aug. 1.
