Construction returning to downtown Medicine Hat

Apr 17, 2025 | 11:37 AM

Construction will return to downtown Medicine Hat on Tuesday.

It’s a continuation of the utility and surfacing projects for Sixth Avenue Southeast and Third Street Southeast that started last year and brought three intersections to a halt.

The final phases of the projects are anticipated to be completed by late June 2025, weather permitting, the city said Thursday.

Access to businesses will remain open downtown throughout the construction, according to a city news release. Closures last summer angered some downtown small business owners who said the city’s approach put their livelihoods at risk.

The city is offering 20 free public parking spaces in the Transit Terminal and Parkade during construction, with five on the second level and 15 on the third level. The parkade will still be accessible from Fourth Avenue Southeast.

The only impact to transit service during the construction will be the boarding location of two routes, the city said.

Route 11 will board where Route 22 regularly boards. Route 22 will board in the southeast corner of the terminal, along the adjacent alleyway. Signage will be posted on site to direct affected riders.

The 300 block of Sixth Avenue Southeast — including the intersection at Fourth Avenue Southeast — will close Tuesday.

Upgrades to the storm collection system and road structure on Sixth Avenue Southeast are needed as the road surface has reached the end of its service life. Motorists are asked to please obey all posted signage and detours in the area.

Work remaining along Third Street Southeast includes top-lift paving, a concrete mid-block crossing, select sidewalk replacements, pavement markings and landscaping on the 500 block, according to the city.

Drivers can expect to see off-street work begin in April. Work that requires road closures, including the intersection at Sixth Avenue Southeast, will proceed once the road’s rehabilitation is complete.
