Public town hall on Mustard Seed concerns taking place tonight

Jan 8, 2025 | 4:00 PM

The public will have a chance to voice their concerns about the Mustard Seed’s homeless shelter in Medicine Hat at a town hall Wednesday evening.

The “On The Record” forum will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Medicine Hat Public Library’s basement theatre.

Residents are encouraged to bring their frustrations, complaints, concerns and suggestions.

Attendees are asked to RSVP to JNelson@MHCHS.ca or by phoning 403-528-5189.

The event, hosted by the Medicine Hat Community Housing Society and the Mustard Seed, comes after complaints from the public about the behaviour of some the people who use the Mustard Seed’s services at its shelter location.

There was a town hall at the police station late last year that wasn’t attended by the broader public.

Since then, the Mustard Seed has remained in the headlines after announcing an effort to temporary expand its capacity upon a request from the Alberta government and controversy over a communications plan surrounding its future.

Currently, the province, city, the community housing organization and the Mustard Seed itself are working to find a new location that would centralize its services and address concerns raised by residents.

Work on a shortlist is underway.
