Alberta government announcing photo radar changes

Dec 2, 2024 | 12:12 PM

The Alberta government will be announcing changes that could have a major effect on how photo radar is conducted.

Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen will be announcing the changes on Monday alongside the president of Rural Municipalities of Alberta, Kara Westerlund.

In late 2023 photo radar sites were banned on ring roads in both Calgary and Edmonton.

The province has said it was looking at getting rid of, “fishing hole” locations including provincial highways and city roads that link up to them.

That would allow them to focus on high risk areas like playground, school and construction zones.

Medicine Hat Police inspector Joe West, has denied there are any so-called fishing holes in Medicine Hat.

Critics of photo radar have called it a, “cash cow”, while supporters worry removing photo radar could make roads less safe.
