Breakdance battle in Medicine Hat this weekend

Nov 29, 2024 | 3:40 PM

Elementz Dance Studio is hosting a breakdance battle by the name of Baddest in the Badlands this weekend.

Competitors from across Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C will be in attendance for a chance at prize winnings totalling $1,000.

There will be a category for youth thirteen and under, and also a group for all ages of dancers.

Studio owner Mercury Thomas said it will be similar to what you watched for break dancing in the Olympics this year.

“But it’ll be a two-v-two this time. Teams of two going against each other,” Thomas said.

“Judges, they’re looking for a lot of things, originality, creativity, also just the moves. Some people score it differently, in their head, they’re like, that person did perfectly on this, but maybe messed up a little bit on that.”

Thomas said anyone of all ages is welcome to enter.

“If you think you got some moves, you could try to take part. Or just come down and watch,” Thomas said.

“We have all ages dancing, the winner of that takes home $800. We have an under 13, the winner of that takes home $200.”

The Baddest in the Badlands competition will take place at Stir Studio at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
