Medicine Hat Tigers acquire goaltender Meneghin from Hurricanes, send Boehm to Royals

The Medicine Hat Tigers made a deal Saturday to help solidify their goaltending for the season after dropping their third straight game to the Red Deer Rebels on Friday night.

Goaltender Harrison Meneghin is coming to the Tigers from the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Meneghin, born in 2004 had spent his entire WHL career with the Hurricanes posting a career record of 46-33-7-2 with a .913 save percentage.

His play in the 2023-24 season earned him Goaltender of the Year for the Central Division.

Meneghin was then drafted 206th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Tigers head coach and general manager Willie Desjardins said he feels Meneghin is a top three goaltender in the league.

“We needed his presence to make a good playoff run,” said Desjardins.

On the way back to Lethbridge is 2005 born forward Shane Smith, a Cessford, Alta. product was in his third full season with the Tigers after getting into games with the team over the past five seasons.

” Shane has been a big part of our organization and we’re saddened to lose a player of his skill and character. The problem is when you want to get something good you have to give up something good,” said Desjardins.

“We wish Shane all the best and thank him for his time in Medicine Hat.”

Smith also played a few seasons of minor hockey in Medicine Hat with the South East Athletic Club U15 AAA team and South Alberta Hockey Academy U18 Prep team prior to his career with the Tigers.

Smith put up 85 points through 143 games over his time with the Tigers and had recently returned from training camp with the Vegas Golden Knights.

With Western Hockey League teams only able to have three 2004 born players in their lineup on any given night, and a deadline of Oct. 16 to have only three in place on the roster, the Tigers made the decision to move one of their current 20 year old players out on Tuesday to remain at that limit.

Forward Brayden Boehm, born in 2004 will get to finish his Western Hockey League career closer to home, as the Tigers have traded the Nanaimo, B.C. native to the Victoria Royals.

Coming back to the Tigers is a 2026 3rd Round Draft Pick and a conditional 2027 5th Round Draft Pick.

Boehm had spent the last five season with the Tigers putting up 70 points in 154 games.

The Medicine Hat Tigers are in action tonight hosting the Moose Jaw Warriors at Co-op Place at 7 p.m.

Plenty of tickets are still available.
