Man wanted on Canada-wide warrant arrested in Medicine Hat after shots fired

Sep 23, 2024 | 9:54 AM

A 34-year-old man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant was taken to hospital Saturday afternoon after shooting himself in the South East Hill neighbourhood of Medicine Hat, police said.

The Medicine Hat Police Service said officers tried to convince the man to surrender when they located him at a residence in the 400 block of Eighth Street Southeast.

After the suspect refused to comply with police requests to surrender, they used non-lethal impact rounds to prevent him from entering a nearby residence.

Police said the man then discharged his firearm, injuring himself.

That allowed officers to arrest him before he was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Alberta’s director of law enforcement was notified and deemed the incident to be out of scope for investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team.

As a result, the MHPS Criminal Investigation Section will continue the investigation, police said.
