Construction on Third Street Southeast in downtown Medicine Hat has been underway since April.

The 600 block was expected to open up in early August as part of the five stages for this construction year

But that has been delayed.

Cody Hyam, a city environmental utilities engineer, said residents won’t have to wait too much longer to see that section open.

“The top lift asphalt that’s been completed the curb and gutters in,” Hyam said.

“We are still waiting for a plan for the pour schedule for the boulevards, which would be the remaining component of that block,” he added.

“With the weather currently, it has pushed the pour schedule back a bit, but we’re hoping to mitigate the delay with strategic pour structure, which will allow us to open the block sometime next week.”

The final stage of downtown construction on third street south east on the 500 block is still hopeful to be completed by the end of October.

Hyam said the underground work has been completed, the services have not all been switched over yet, and the weather has set back the surface work.

However, crews are expect to start on the gravel and the surfacing work mid to late next week.

Overall though, Hyam feels the projects has gone well, and the contractor has kept up a good pace despite some hiccups along the way with the 600 block.

“We found some underground infrastructure that we didn’t expect,” Hyam said.

“That took some time to investigate, to come up with a game plan, but we came up with a good solution with our partners, and we’re able to navigate through those issues.”

Hyam said they do apologize for the disruption this has caused, but have been happy with the work completed so far, and the publics understanding.

He added the city has kept up open communication with businesses in the area.
