Crown prosecutors have upgraded charges against a Medicine Hat woman accused of mail theft.

Police officers arrested a suspect on the night of April 10 as she was leaving the scene of a reported theft in progress at a community mail box.

The 41-year-old female was charged with several mail-related thefts and investigators said they expected further charges to be laid as the case progressed.

Search warrants were used at two storage lockers within the city as well as a local residence.

Thousands of reported and unreported items of mail, both letters and parcels, were recovered.

Investigators with the Medicine Hat City Police Service have linked the suspect to 30 mail box thefts in the city and surrounding area, and charges have been upgraded to include theft of mail, possession of break-in instruments, Canada Post keys, stolen credit cards and data and possession of identity documents and information.

Canada Post is working to return the recovered mail and packages once they are no longer needed for the investigation.

Cassandra Chenoweth, 41, returns to court in Medicine Hat on Sept. 17.
