Medicine Hat Mavericks kick off weekend series, with superhero night fundraiser Saturday

“Dominic, our son, who had leukemia and passed away in 2015, one of the things he got to do in his last summer was throw the first pitch at a game and I think that that sort of, you know, became the impetus for doing a Superhero Night the next night,” Rooney said.

“Obviously, he was a superhero. He was always giving the thumbs up and smiling at people and spreading positivity and we looked to sort of do that in his memory.”

Through Dominicstrong, Rooney and his wife Trish have been able to raise more than $300,000 for the Alberta Children’s Hospital since Dominic was diagnosed with leukemia in 2013.

The superhero night with the Mavericks normally raising about $1000, with Rooney saying it’s a great way to kick off their multiple fundraising events throughout the year.

The jerseys this year will have a Spider-man theme and will be sold for $100 dollars through the Mavericks.

Rooney had planned on using this jersey idea since 2020.

“Well, pandemic happened, that didn’t exactly wind up working out and we came back from pandemic. Shipping lanes were a little more difficult to get a hold of and so we went with hats the one year and we went with socks another year,” Rooney said.

“We’re thrilled to get back to some jerseys again. This is an idea that’s sort of been brewing in my head for about five years. I’m glad to see it finally come into fruition.”

Fans are encourage to come dress up as superheroes during Saturday night’s game.

Rooney and his wife will have a booth set up at the game, happy to talk with people about their fundraising efforts and enjoying the night.
