Medicine Hat’s low income support programs add second year

Other initiatives include tax credits up to $100 per month and transit passes totalling $670 annually.

Low-income households will still need to apply, but Community Supports Manager Shona Dickie said Monday the city has experienced a significant increase of applicants as compared to last year.

Nearly 1,800 households have applied and been approved for the program, but Dickie said she’s proud that the city has this program in place to provide opportunities for every Hatter in need, regardless of their income.

“I think it’s just great for the community in general. We want our children, our families, our individuals to access services again regardless of what their income is,” Dickie said.

“To be able to take the bus if that’s what the need. Maybe they don’t have any other means of transportation, maybe they just think the program is a really great idea and have access to our recreation programs and Esplanade learning just like any other family would,” she said.

Community members who are looking to apply will need to provide proof of income as well as a utility receipt proving that you are a Medicine Hat resident.
