Our Town: Chinese Restaurants

With the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885, Chinese labourers employed on the project were out of work.

Due to anti-Chinese sentiment at the time, many were unable to find jobs elsewhere, and many opted to go into business for themselves by operating restaurants.

Data from the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre found 49 different Chinese restaurants in Medicine Hat since 1900.
