Mulder the facility dog finally got to hang up his vest Friday afternoon.
The Medicine Hat Police Service held a retirement party in celebration of his eight years of service.
Mulder’s handler, Sherry Kuss had mixed emotions about the day.
“It’s a sad day because he has done so much service for so long that I just can’t really think about life without Mulder doing the work that he’s done,” Kuss told CHAT News.
“It’s also filled with excitement for him. He gets to retire now and do things that other dogs do.”
Mulder and his handler Sherry KussMulder, introduced in November’s ‘Meeting Mulder’ Series, was trained by Dogs with Wings.
He offered emotional support to both children and adults affected by violence or tragedy and guided victims through the lengthy justice system process.
After Friday, Kuss says Mulder is going to spend his retirement relaxing and running through the coulee’s of Medicine Hat.
But first, the people Mulder has impacted throughout the years got to thank him and celebrate his retirement.
“He just brings a level of calmness and he has had the ‘it’ factor. The factor when someone comes into the room, he just knows what to do,” Kuss said.
“He’s impacted so many people in the community, at the station, just in our day-to-day lives. It’s just really indescribable sometimes.”
Mulder will still visit the Police Service from time to time, because Kuss said it’s his second home.
