Medicine Hat students have new pathways into early trades

Students at the Medicine Hat Public School Division can find a new and early way into trade schools.

Targeted at students from Grades 9 to 12, the duel credit program offered will let students earn extra credit through work placement across the city, giving students real world experience.

Post-secondaries across southern Alberta, including Medicine Hat College and the University of Lethbridge, have stared giving college credit towards program completion.

Associate superintendent Corey Sadlemyer said that every student who completed the course passed with an average grade of 92 per cent.

Sadlemyer said that the program easily opens new doors for students who might not go to college or university.

“The partnerships are super excited, we’ve got our building association on board and they’re excited about it, we have post-secondaries excited about it, we got partner school divisions that want to work together, that is great,” Sadlemyer said.

“Just the opportunities that are there for our high school kids that weren’t there before. As we shared in the presentation, we had kids who were able to finish with a semesters worth of college credits, for free, payed for by the school division and also receive high school credits at the same time,” he said.

“It’s pretty neat.”

Sadlemyer said that the STEM program is acting as a launch pad for the Career Pathways program.
