Three Albertans to be inducted into Order of Canada

Feb 20, 2024 | 9:37 AM

Dozens of Canadians are set to receive the highest honour in the country, three of whom are from Alberta.

Governor General Mary Simon announced that she will induct 61 people into the order, including one who will be named a Companion, as well as 17 Officers and 43 Members.

The three Albertans, who will all be inducted as Members, include:

Jackie Flanagan – Calgary

Flanagan is known as a philanthropist and a supporter of the arts. She is the creator of the Alberta Views magazine, which is described as offering “alternative perspectives on political and social issues, and celebrates the province’s cultural and artistic richness.” She also established the Flanagan Foundation, which support projects and organizations across multiple sectors.

Frances Elizabeth Wright – Calgary

Wright is known as a passionate advocate for social justice and is a co-founder of the Famous 5 Foundation. Through the Foundation, Wright helped to create two historical monuments to honour the champions of the Persons’ Case, which established the right of women to be appointed to the Senate in Canada. She was part of an effort to change the words of Canada’s national anthem from “in all our sons command” to “in all of us command.” Wright is also the co-founder of the Canadian Centre for Adult Male Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse.

Raymond Alexander Muzyka – Edmonton

Muzyka is the co-founder and former CEO of the video game development company BioWare. The studio is known for creating groundbreaking franchises such as Baldur’s Gate, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. After leading BioWare’s expansion across Canada, the United States, and Europe, Muzyka now focuses on “angel investing” through ThresholdImpact, a social impact investment enterprise that works with people to innovate in technology, new media, and medicine.

The Order of Canada ceremony is scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 22, 2024 in the Rideau Hall Ballroom in Ottawa.

The full list of appointees can be found on the Governor General of Canada website.
