New recall for fresh cut cantaloupe due to salmonella concerns

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a new cantaloupe-related recall due to salmonella concerns.

The new recall, which is for fresh cut cantaloupe distributed nationally, comes just two days after the Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed that five Canadians have died from a salmonella outbreak linked to Malichita and Rudy brand cantaloupes.

It had also confirmed that 129 people have tested positive for salmonella in connection to this outbreak.

Cantaloupe recalls were issued first back in early October, according to The Canadian Press.

Again, product is fresh cut cantaloupe, so won’t have a brand name. The recall lists Loblaw Companies Limited. The CFIA clarified to rdnewsNOW that this recall applies to Loblaw’s banner stores only.

What you should do

• If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider
• Check to see if you have recalled products
• Do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products
• Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased

According to the CFIA: Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
