Warm and dry weather leaves snow removal company waiting for winter work

MEDICINE HAT, AB – In October we saw a dump of snow that we haven’t seen since. This has left some snow removal companies wondering, ‘when will there be work?’ This included Matthew Gourley and his local company, Surface Pro.

“I was like, ‘yeah, this is gonna be fantastic. I’m looking forward to this, this is going to be a good season,’ and then absolutely nothing come November,” explains Gourley when asked about the first snowfall in October.

Surface Pro offers services such as driveway sealing, window cleaning and snow removal in the winter.

Usually, their snow removal season starts in November. Instead, they’ve been doing a lot of gutter cleaning to stay busy. However, Gourley is still itching for the first snowfall, keeping an eye on the farmers almanac.

“Well, fortunately we do have contracts that are available to us, so customers do pay for an entire season, so we’re not too worried about the financials when it comes down to it,” says Gourley. “But the reality is that, we want a little bit more, we want to be able to serve a little bit more in terms of a customer base and getting new customers, that’s where this really impacts us.”

Gourley may be monitoring that almanac for a while, as the weather forecast currently calls for a light snowfall Monday.
