Tigers expect a competitive training camp

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Tigers hit the ice this morning for the first on-ice practices of training camp.

The 2023-24 roster hopefuls were put through their first paces hoping to make an impression on the coaching staff.

Associate coach Joe Frazer says it’s an exciting time as they get to see how the younger players improved since the spring orientation camp and which older players took a step forward over the summer.

“We’re really excited about the ’07s and ’08s but we got a lot of good older players that they’ve gotta push for ice time. So we expect his to be a very competitive camp,” he says.

“Our forward group we got 15, 16 guys that are all pushing for spots. We got a lot of D, and we got quite a bit of goalies here too. So it’s going to be a really competitive camp and that’s what you want. In order to win in this league you gotta have a lot of depth and hopefully this camp will show that and it’s going to be competitive.”

Open to the public, training camp will feature scrimmages on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and ends with an intra-squad game at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

There are also a pair of on-ice workouts Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m.

The first pre-season game for the Tigers is in Lethbridge on Sept. 5. The teams will battle again in Medicine Hat on Sept. 9.

The regular season starts with two games against the Calgary Hitmen, Sept. 22 on the road and the following night back home at Co-op Place.
