Deputy PM Freeland tours Alberta’s leading clean energy facility

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland was in the Peace Country Tuesday touring the Tourmaline 3-10 Natural Gas Plant.

This visit took place during an ongoing stalemate with the provincial and federal governments regarding clean energy regulations.

The deputy prime minister spent the day touring the Tourmaline facility, meeting and strategizing with crews about operations and innovations, and the Alberta clean energy sector; which she says is a global leader.

She says this sector is not only paving the way for clean energy, but supporting the economy as well; creating jobs for Albertans. She announced the national unemployment rates dropped last month to 5.5 per cent, a historical low.

“Tourmaline here in the Peace Country is producing some of the cleanest natural gas in the world, and as the biggest producer in the country, this important work is creating thousands of great careers for Canadians. Our government understands the importance of clean LNG and natural gas in the world today, for the Canadian economy, and for our allies around.”

Freeland added, this is why the federal government is planning on helping further innovation, with government funding.

“I want you to know that our government is committed to helping you do that work, that’s why, for example, our government is delivering a generous refundable tax credit for investments in carbon capture utilization and storage. CCUS is going to be important for the energy industry and it is going to be important for industries like cement and steel production, that also need to reduce their emissions.”

The announcement is continuing on the federal’s governments goal of a net-zero economy by 2050, which Freeland says will need Alberta’s help.

“That’s why our $120 billion clean economy plan was built with Alberta at its heart, and that’s because Alberta has the resources, very smart, hard-working, innovative people, and the expertise that Canada, and the rest of the world need.”

However, Premier Danielle Smith in a release last week, said these clean energy regulations are not fit for Alberta and would endanger the reliability of our province’s power grid.
