Hatter hiking world’s highest active volcano for local charity

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A local woman is taking hiking to another level in an attempt to raise money for the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.

Sarah MacKenzie, business manager at Royal LePage Community Realty, will join some of her colleagues across Canada on a five-day hike to raise money. The hike is to raise funds and awareness for those seeking safety and a life free from abuse. The adventure will take Sarah to Mount Cotopaxi in Ecuador, the world’s highest active volcano.

MacKenzie is no stranger to challenging herself physically and mentally to raise funds for the shelter.

“I signed up and did my first trek in 2019 in the Sahara and really enjoyed it. I did one again in 2021 in the Purcell Mountains in B.C., and thought why not try to keep going,” says MacKenzie.

Throughout her adventures, MacKenzie has raised over $20,000 in donations for the cause.

“There’s so many women and children in our own community that are living in an unsafe, unfamiliar, unpredictable environment. so I can hopefully try and help those people by raising some funds for the women’s shelter where they can provide programming and services where they will help them rebuild their lives safe from violence,” says MacKenzie.

She’ll be camping in a tent without cell service, electricity or other home comforts.

“It’s something that pushes me physically and mentally, but then it allows me also to help people.”
