MEDICINE HAT, AB – City council heard the first reading of a bylaw that would allow humane societies to conduct Trap-Neuter-Return programs in the city.

City administration has made changes to the Responsible Animal Ownership bylaw that looks at reducing the population of feral cats.

At its June 5 meeting council defeated the original bylaw that would allow a TNR program, promoting the city to make changes.

At its July 4 meeting council heard presentations from officials with the SPCA and APARC supporting TNR programs.

Over that time councillors have also received backlash from animal advocates in the community.

Council voted unanimously on hearing the first reading of the bylaw.

They are expected to debate and vote on the bylaw at their next meeting on Aug. 21.
