MEDICINE HAT, AB – Over 100 skilled archers from across Alberta are preparing to take their shot at glory this weekend.

The Medicine Hat Archery Club is hosting the first tournament on a five-leg ASA tour. An ASA tournament is conducted with 3D animals. The event will begin tomorrow morning at Whispering Pines Camp in Elkwater.

Dan David is a long time member and past-president of the Medicine Hat Archery Club. For David, what started as bow-hunting, turned into alife-long affiliation with the archery community.

David says people from all over Alberta travel for the tournament.

The format of the tournament includes 3 different courses. Small groups of archers tackle a course, similar to golfing. Then on Sunday, the top contenders participate in a shootout for prizes and medals.

Being a 14-time provincial champion, David usually shoots for that podium, but due to injury he is taking a different approach for this years tournament.

“Well, I’ve been off on an injury for a while now, so I’m just gonna try to keep up this weekend, and just have fun and visit some friends that I haven’t seen for a while,” David says.

He adds, “that’s a big part of it, is the people, it turns into the archery family. Especially for me after 35 years, so it’s good to see people.”

David says the best time to watch the archers in action is at the shootout Sunday after lunch.
