Curling team makes history with U20 Canadian Championship win

AIRDRIE/SHERWOOD PARK, AB – A competitive curling team based out of Airdrie and Sherwood Park have begun to make a name for themselves nation-wide.

At only 17 years old, Myla Plett and her team, comprised of Alyssa Nedohin, Chloe Fediuk, Allie Iskiw and Blair Lenton, made history by winning the U20 Canadian Championships early April. The team also won U18 Nationals in February.

Skip Myla Plett shared her reaction to the accomplishment.

“I actually didn’t know we had made history, until right after the game I talked to an interviewer and he said, ‘how does it feel to make history and be the first team to win U18’s and U20’s in the same year?’ And, like that just shocked me right after.”

Although the team has been to two U18 National Championships, this was their first U20 Nationals. Being one of the younger teams, Plett said she had just hoped to enjoy the experience, learn and potentially qualify for playoffs. Winning the final greatly exceeded their expectations.

“Honestly it struck, like flying home that we had actually won. Even when we had won it I was like, ‘what did we just do?’ We were all like hugging and crying so, it was just unbelievable to have that experience,” said Plett.

Next for Team Plett is a trip to Finland at the World Junior Curling Championships. This event begins on February 17th, 2024, and more information can be found here.
