E-Scooters could make their return next week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – E-Scooters will be returning to Medicine Hat this month, as long as the weather cooperates.

Through a collaboration with Bird Canada, about 100 electric scooters will be placed around the city to offer residents an alternate and enjoyable mode of transportation.

Riders are required to download the Bird smartphone app to rent a scooter.

The cost to ride is $1.15 to unlock and an additional $0.35 per minute while in operation.

The city says they have received positive feedback from the public surrounding e-scooters since they were introduced last year.

“Generally speaking people enjoy just taking them out and going for a spin together. You know whether it’s downtown or any of the other places they can go and they have a good time doing it.” says Business and Innovation Manager, Parks and Recreation.

The maximum speed limit for e-scooters is 20 km/h but that speed can be reduced in high-traffic areas to 10 – 15 km/h.

“Like anything on our trails, just respect the other users on the trail, slow down, pay attention to your surroundings. Helmets are highly recommended and then you have to be over 16 to utilize them as well so we want everybody to enjoy it but enjoy it safely, adds Richter.

The launch of e-scooters will be gradual and dependent on weather conditions, however city officials expect to see them on streets as soon as next week.
