MP Glen Motz says too much spending in 2023 budget

Mar 29, 2023 | 4:50 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Liberal government announced $59.5 billion of spending within the next five years in yesterday’s 2023 budget report.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s budget also made an emphasis on clean economic transition, healthcare and cost-of-living relief.

But Glen Motz, the Conservative Party of Canada MP for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner, is finding budget day more of a spending day.

The Conservatives demanded three main objectives for the budget, including lower taxes for workers, less wasteful spending and more affordable housing for Canadians.

Motz says the budget fails to meet these demands, and adds $43 billion dollars of new inflationary spending in taxes. In addition, the grocery rebate fails to account for the increase in costs projected in the 2023 consumer food price report.

The Conservative Party demands the carbon tax be removed, as it doesn’t prove helpful for the environment.

Motz says that nothing within the budget aims at balancing spending, only accumulating debt for Canadians.

“Canada’s national debt for this fiscal year for 2023 to 2024 is projected to reach 1.22 trillion dollars – that’s around 82,000 dollars per household in Canada. And there is no balance in this budget to even balance it,” said Motz.

MP Motz says the Conservatives are voting against this tabled budget.
