New fundraiser to support The Mustard Seed’s wellness programs

Feb 27, 2023 | 5:15 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – After parting with the “Coldest Night of the Year” event, the Mustard Seed announces a new program

It’s called “Move with the Seed,” and it imparts a special message through walking, swimming or any movement you can think of.

Participants sign up online and download an app that tracks their distance through walking, swimming, biking or running – any physical activity desired. Family and friends then sponsor and donate to the cause.

The fundraised money is meant to increase access to the Mustard Seed’s wellness programs, including counseling, ID programs and community paramedics.

Morgan Widmer, the Mustard Seed’s events and volunteer coordinator, says she hopes the event raises awareness for how much a homeless person walks in a day – which averages at 20 kilometers a day.

“We wanted to create an opportunity that will give participants a sense of awareness about one aspect of the harsh realities some of our clients face daily, while empowering them to do what they can to make an impact in the lives of our vulnerable community,” said Rowena Browne, The Mustard Seed’s Chief Development Officer.

Widmer says the distance walked often comes from a lack of access to transportation.

The program happens on March 1st to May 31st at all Mustard Seed locations, including Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Kamloops, Edmonton and Calgary. “Move with the Seed” also includes an online 50/50 raffle and Medicine Hat will have an online silent auction.
