Medicine Hat area population increases to just over 80,000 people

MEDICINE HAT, AB The population for the census metropolitan area of Medicine Hat has hit over 80,000.

Statistics Canada has released new data regarding annual demographic estimates and Medicine Hat CMA saw a 1.1 per cent increase between July 1, 2021 and July 1, 2022.

Our population grew by 855 people to 80,126. This is the first time since 2013 that the population has increased by more than 800 people. In 2021, we actually saw a decrease of 51 people.

Factors influencing population were net internation migration of 588 people and 552 net interprovincial migration. Net intraprovincial migration was -146 and -139 natural increase.

63.8 per cent of the population is between the ages of 15-64, 19.9 percent are aged 0-14 while the remaining 16.4 per cent are 65 years and older.
