Bone-chilling temperatures persist in Medicine Hat and across Alberta

Dec 21, 2022 | 10:07 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The entire province of Alberta as well as much of Saskatchewan and B.C. are under extreme cold warnings as bone-chilling temperatures persist in western Canada.

Environment Canada says extremely cold wind chill values of -40 C or colder will continue through this week in its Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield region. The coldest wind chill values will occur in the overnight and early morning hours. Some areas may see wind chill values of -50 C or colder Wednesday morning and again tonight.

The forecasts are the same for other regions across southern Alberta. A warming trend is expected by the weekend, and temperatures are forecast to be around zero degrees for Christmas Day. A chinook is expected to roll in and stay until the end of next week.

The weather agency says records were broken across Alberta yesterday. A new record of -34.4 C was set in the Bow Island area, passing the -34.2 C set in 2008. In Onefour the temperature dropped to -34.3 C, breaking the 71-year-old record by a full degree.

A low of -43.2 C was recorded in the Jasper area.

Extremely cold wind chill values of down to -50 C were recorded in parts of Saskatchewan.

In Manitoba, extremely cold wind chills are forecast to continue through the week.
