MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat’s longest-serving mayor has passed away.

Ted Grimm died on Saturday, following an illness. Mr. Grimm was in his late 80s.

He served as an alderman from 1968-1974, and then was elected as mayor for the 1974-1977 term. In 1980 he was once again elected mayor for the first of seven consecutive terms, serving until 2001. He ran for mayor again in 2007 but was unsuccessful in his attempt.

Mr. Grimm first moved to Medicine Hat in 1956, at age 20, to work at Northwest Nitro Chemicals where he became involved in the trade union movement. He then went to the University of Calgary and obtained his teaching degree and returned to Medicine Hat.

During this time he married Ruth Light and had four children, Lynda, Douglas, Maureen and Michelle.

While he taught, he also began to get involved in local politics.
