Water quality improving in Vauxhall, Enchant and Hays

TABER, AB – The Municipal District of Taber has provided an update on what they say is the musty or earthy smell and taste coming from tap water in a number of towns in the area.

According to the Vauxhall and District Regional Water Services Commission, the problem was first noticed on Nov. 4, in Vauxhall, Enchant and Hays.

The commission says it has been engaging with specialists to address the challenges but assures residents that the water continues to meet all Alberta Environment approvals and drinking water standards.

The unpleasant taste and odour episodes are a natural phenomenon caused by seasonal biological changes in the source water, producing odour-causing organic compounds, according to the commission.

Most municipalities in Alberta that obtain their water supply from surface water sources experience this problem periodically starting in the summer or early fall.

According to a Facebook post from the Municipal District of Taber, “Recent flushing of regional distribution lines and the continual application of powder-activated carbon (PAC), often used to mitigate taste/odour issues, have yielded noticeable improvements based on taste tests and community feedback.”

“The unpleasant taste and odour may appear that the water is ‘off’ and not safe to drink. However, the municipal water supply remains safe to drink during these episodes,” they added.

While treatments are ongoing through the regional system, it’s estimated to take some additional time before residents see any improvements.
