Byelection campaign in Medicine Hat at the halfway point

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It is the halfway point in the byelection campaign for the constituency of Brooks-Medicine Hat.

NDP candidate Gwendoline Dirk was joined by Opposition Leader Rachel Notley. Notley says there is a lot of momentum for the NDP in this area. About 50 volunteers turned out to help knock on doors Tuesday evening. “The other candidate in this race hasn’t been here in weeks, and won’t even commit to living here should she win,” Notley stated.

Dirk officially launched her campaign for the upcoming byelection on Oct. 12.

Since then, the NDP says volunteers have spent more than 1,000 hours talking to over 3,000 local residents, and have made over 7,500 phone calls.

Dirk says, “we are painting Brooks-Medicine Hat Orange and we are far from done. “We will be out tonight, tomorrow, and every day talking to voters about what matters to them. They are looking for help with the affordability crisis, the worst we have seen in 40 years. They want a plan to recruit more family doctors and end the chaos in our healthcare system. They want good paying jobs now, and for their children in the future.”

UCP candidate Danielle Smith officially opened her campaign office in Medicine Hat on Wednesday morning.

Smith spoke to a crowd of nearly 100 people and discussed issues she had begun hearing from constituents. She named restoring regional air service to the city and the potential for a new U.S. border crossing as items which were brought up to her. The twinning of Highway 3 remains her main local priority.
