Medicine Hat Transit has launched new e-fare system

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Transit officially launched the new Go Pass Saturday, that allows transits user to handle all their bus fare needs online.

The new system comes as a physical card that is linked to an online account that allows you to load money onto it, or purchase a monthly pass.

Manager of transit Gordon Dykstra says the card is not only meant to benefit the rider, but the driver as well by lowering the amount of paper passes they have to personally check.

“The system validates that pass instantaneously. So they get a display on their screen that says that’s a good pass, or that’s not a good pass. It’s just one less thing for them to have to worry about.”

Dykstra mentioned another benefit for the consumer is the ability to recover the funds on your card, were you to lose it, also how the idea for the system came about.

“The initial goal of the pass was to attract new riders, and give us better data in terms of managing the system as we try to recover from the loss of ridership we experienced during covid.”

Overall Dykstra was happy with how the pass has been performing in the first couple days. Saying there’s been a couple hiccups that have been easily fixed, as well that he has only heard positive things from drivers and riders.
