Irish republican party Sinn Fein asks Canada to halt trade talks with U.K.

Oct 18, 2022 | 1:23 PM

OTTAWA — The Irish political party pushing for unifying the island wants Ottawa to halt trade talks with London.

Sinn Fein argues that Britain is violating the Good Friday Agreement, which brokered peace in Ireland in 1998.

The U.K. government has proposed unilateral changes to the deal it signed with the European Union after Brexit.

The changes involve the Irish border, which experts fear could inflame tensions between Catholic and Protestant groups.

On a visit to Canada, Sinn Fein MP John Finucane says Ottawa needs to hit the brakes on its own trade talks with Britain for a post-Brexit deal.

He argues that because Canada helped with Ireland’s peace process, it should stand up to attempts to modify the Good Friday Agreement.
