Early morning fire damages local motel

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A unit at the Sun Dek motel at 855 Gershaw Dr. SW was badly damaged in an early morning fire.

Medicine Hat firefighters were called around 1:30 a.m. and were on scene for about two and a half hours.

The lone occupant of the suite was able to escape, but firefighters did need to rescue a person trapped by smoke in the unit above; that person was not injured.

Brian Armstrong was in the unit next door, and describes the chaotic scene.

“When I ran out, it was just everyone screaming and shouting, telling people to get out,” Armstrong says. “Police were kicking down doors for people that weren’t awake and everyone just had to get evacuated real quick.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
