Great Big Pedal kicks off Bike Week

MEDICING HAT, AB – Tourism Medicine Hat and Bike Medicine Hat are inviting Hatters to Kin Coulee Park Monday to participate in the Great Big Pedal.

The family-friendly ride has three routes to choose from, with food trucks and a DJ to enjoy before and after the ride.

“It’s a nice social ride, not a race,” says Shelley Acheson, Event Director for Bike Medicine Hat. “Just getting the community out to come and enjoy all the beautiful trails here.”

Registration runs from 5:30 p.m. until 6:15 p.m., and the ride push off will be at 6:30 from the band shell in Kin Coulee.

Each route will have a lead and sweep to make sure the group stays together.

“We’re trying to keep everyone together and make sure everyone stays on the right hand side of the road,” says Acheson.

All ages and types of bikes are welcome. Participants who registered in advance will get a food truck voucher, but those who didn’t are still able to participate. Waivers will be at the registration for people looking to join the ride last minute.

The event is aimed to promote cycling in Medicine Hat and teach people how to ride the trails safely, including staying on the right-hand side of pathways and roads.

“See how social being on your bike can be,” Acheson says. “When you go in your vehicle places you don’t actually get to say hi or wave. When you bike, you get that chance to connect with humans.
