City to investigate whether a crack is leading to low water levels at Echo Dale boating lake

MEDICINE HAT, AB- If you have been to Echo Dale Regional Park in recent days, you may have noticed the boating lake is unusually low.

The city says they are aware of how low the water is.

They say this year they have had a hard time maintaining the water flow to the man-made boating lake.

A line pumping water from South Saskatchewan River is in place to maintain the water flow.

The city says provincial approval was required in order for them to pump water into the lake. The Alberta Conservation Association has also been notified to ensure the safety and health of the fish in the lake.

While an exact cause of the low water levels has not been determined, director of parks and recreation James Will says a leak may be responsible.

” Maintaining the water levels, we know the challenge was with the river flows, and the turbidity of the water, it made it challenging to pump in. But we do suspect there is a leak in the liner . The clay liner is approximately the same age as Echo Dale Park itself. We know Echo Dale park was built in the 1980’s. We expect that there is a leak in the bottom of that. We don’t know that at this point and time. So obviously it is difficult to send a diver down and find that out. When we get into fall season we can look into draining all the water, and find the cause of the leak.” he said.

Even though the water levels are low, the city says the lake is still open for people to enjoy.
