MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat’s mural collection has grown by one. The latest piece of art has taken over a wall at The Yard.

The work was commissioned by the restaurant to add more colour to the space. Local artist Christina Carry with Artisan Riot painted the mural.

“They wanted to brighten up the wall and make it more representative of what they want to do here,” says Carry. “So, outside, fun, bright colours, flowers and bubbles.”

Carry has painted a few murals in the city like the one on the Earl’s patio and at Casa Amigos Cantina. She says each mural is unique and it’s a process of doing a little bit and then stepping back to take in the full picture.

“I do a lot of research online and look at different ideas and put them together,” Carry says. “As the process goes it kind of evolves into its own thing over time. I kind of start with one image and work from there and it kind of becomes something different as you go.”

Carry says the goal of this piece was to attract people passing by.

“They wanted to beautify it, lots of colours, lots of brightness, and draw people in,” explain Carry.

By all accounts, it has been drawing people in. Carry says the reception to the new work has been positive, with people commenting and sharing her Facebook post showing off the work.

“I’ve reached almost 14,000 people in the last two days,” says Carry. “I’m getting a lot of support from the community.”

Carry says in addition to her work, there are a lot of beautiful murals downtown and she hopes to see even more local artists get involved in adding to the beautification of downtown.
