Info sessions on parks, river recreation underway

Jun 14, 2022 | 2:06 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat will host a public information session this week on how to best utilize the destination parks and potential recreation spaces around the South Saskatchewan River.

The session, at Big Marble Go Centre from 6-8 p.m. on June 16, is in line with recommendations made in the recently adopted Parks & Recreation Master Plan.

Prior to that, a stakeholder engagement session will take place with close to 75 sport and community groups invited to attend. The results of the stakeholder workshop will be shared at the public information session. The public session will also be used to collect feedback on the developing plans for destination parks and open spaces.

“The city completed the South Saskatchewan River Recreation & Leisure Opportunities Assessment in 2015,” says Scott Richter, acting recreation manager and business & innovation manager for parks and recreation. “With updated direction through our master plan now in place, this gives us an opportunity to refine the recommendations made back in 2015 to develop a strategy to protect our river valley, while residents and visitors continue to enjoy it as an amenity in our community.”

According to the city says more public input sessions will be held later this summer before any plans are finalized.

Richter says the city wants the community’s parks and open space to have a balance between responsible recreational use and environmental protection.

“These spaces should be celebrated as a key defining feature of our community,” he says. “We should be able to enjoy them all year round and offer new, forward-thinking activities that are accessible for people of all ages and all abilities.”
