MEDICINE HAT — A cold low is forecast to bring widespread rainfall to southern Alberta for the next days.

Environment Canada has issued rainfall warnings from the mountains as far east as Calgary.

The exact path of the system is hard to forecast, but much of the precipitation is expected in the mountains and foothills on the eastern slopes in Alberta.

Rainfall between 60 to 90 millimeters is forecast for the Oldman river basin, with upwards of 130 mm for the Bow river basin, the two tributaries of the South Saskatchewan river.

Combined with melting snowpack, river levels will increase.

A flood warning is in place for the Bow River at Banff and Canmore, with a flood watch on the Elbow upstream of the Glenmore reservoir.

But storage reservoirs on both river systems are not full and have capacity to receive the water.

Alberta environment also reports water levels on the Bow, Oldman and South Saskatchewan rivers are generally below normal for this time of year.

As well, the ground is not saturated which will also be able to receive the welcome moisture.
