Local methadone clinic to close on Friday

Jun 8, 2022 | 4:11 PM

Medicine Hat, AB–A clinic that helps adults struggling to overcome addiction has abruptly decided to close the doors for good.

Formally known as ACT, the Levitee Clinic located on Maple Avenue will shut down on Friday.

The closure is leading to concerns about the impact to patients who have been undergoing treatment. According to the clinic’s website, it delivered comprehensive addiction treatment services for adults struggling with substance abuse. The goal is to support patients through effective recovery outcomes.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons in Alberta (CPSA) says there are certain timeframes that medical clinics must follow when it comes to closing a practice. However, the Levitee clinic is not owned by a physician so those guidelines do not apply.

In a statement sent to CHAT News, a spokesperson says it’s understandable that the abrupt closure of a clinic can be stressful for both patients and staff. The CPSA is working closely with the clinic’s medical lead, Alberta Health Services, and other health care partners to ensure patients are receiving the care they need as a transition plan is put into place.

CHAT News has reached out to the owner of the clinic who resides in British Columbia to find out the reason for the closure. At the time of publication, the owner had not responded to our inquiries.
