MEDICINE HAT, AB – A long-running annual exhibition is back at the Esplanade.

School Art showcases the artistic talents of local kindergarten to Grade 12 students and has been a Medicine Hat tradition for the past 44 years.

Preparator and gallery assistant Daniel Meller says the show is important because it gives students who love art and are interested in pursuing that as a career a place to showcase their work.

“With the size of the room and the great lighting in here too it’s great for people to see their artwork portrayed in a really professional manner,” he says.

“So that’s a great way to have students to feel like they’re actually in an actual big art show which they are. So it’s great for them, great for their ego, great for their self-confidence to feel like an actual big-name artist like all the other artists that have been here.”

There are about 600 pieces in the 2022 edition everything from acrylic paintings and pencil drawings to digital media and clay and soapstone works.

Meller has been helping with the show for a few years and thinks the quality of the show has been elevated in that time thanks to supplies being easier to access online.

“So it is actually really good for students to have that bevy of options to explore those different mediums you don’t have to be pigeonholed into one certain thing, one certain style of artwork,” he says. “You don’t just have to do pencil crayons or markers you can try everything now and have a real feel when you’re getting up and past Grade 11 and 12 right when you’re heading out into the big world.”

Meller adds teachers and students deserve a shoutout for getting the show together.

A reception and awards ceremony for students and their families takes place June 18. The exhibition runs until the middle of August.
