Conservative leadership candidates to meet face-to-face in Edmonton for next debate

EDMONTON — British Columbia MP Ed Fast says that Conservatives tuning into the next leadership debate hope to see the six candidates vying for the party’s top job will lay off the personal attacks.

Fast, who is co-chairing the campaign of former Quebec premier Jean Charest, says the rivals will need to come together when the race is over if the party hopes to defeat the governing Liberals in the next election.

All candidates will appear at the first official leadership debate in Edmonton on Wednesday, with less than a month left to sell party memberships to supporters who they hope vote for them.

Laryssa Waler, a former spokeswoman for Ontario Premier Doug Ford, says that when it comes to leadership races, debates take a back seat to membership sales.

She says candidates on stage will likely focus on ensuring the level of support for Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre does not reach 50 per cent, and mount attacks to slow his momentum.
