Moe: Saskatchewan not considering provincial gas tax cut

Mar 8, 2022 | 9:02 AM

REGINA – Premier Scott Moe says his Saskatchewan Party government will not follow Alberta’s lead by temporarily reducing a provincial tax on gasoline.

Moe says nothing has been removed from the table, but a tax cut is not under consideration.

He says Alberta is free to do what it needs to do, but Saskatchewan is looking at ways to reduce the cost of living for residents that is not solely through the price of commodities.

Gasoline prices have been steadily rising as global sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine affect Russia’s ability to export crude oil.

In Saskatchewan, consumers pay 15 cents a litre on gasoline and diesel one of the highest among the provinces.

Trent Wotherspoon, finance critic for the NDP Opposition, says he wants the entire tax temporarily rebated to families.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney today announced he is reducing that province’s gasoline tax by 13 cents a litre.
