Vote in June to replace Meili (paNow image)

Saskatchewan NDP leadership vote set for June

REGINA – The Saskatchewan New Democrats will hold a convention in Regina this June to determine the next leader of the party.

Opposition Leader Ryan Meili, who’s also a medical doctor, said earlier this month that he will step down once a new leader is selected.

He says he’s resigning because it has become difficult for people to separate him from his demands for tougher COVID-19 measures.

The province has now removed all of its COVID-19 public health orders.

A spokesperson for the Saskatchewan NDP says members who are in good standing will be eligible to vote for the new leader either online or by mail-in ballot.

No candidate has announced a plan to run, but several NDP MLAs — including Betty Nippi-Albright, Trent Wotherspoon and Nicole Sarauer — have ruled out a bid for leadership.

Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clarke has also said he won’t run to become the NDP leader.
