MEDICINE HAT, AB – The owners of a popular restaurant in Medicine Hat are raising money this week to help with a young family member’s medical needs in Mexico.

Yazmin and Mario Padilla own The Mexican Hat in Crescent Heights. Earlier this year their five-year-old nephew Nicolas was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and will be in treatment for at least a year.

Yazmin said some of the treatment costs are paid for by Mexico’s health-care system, but not all of them.

“Either you have to wait lots of months or it’s an enormous waitlist or it’s just no treatment, you have to seek it otherwise either privately or in another country and we don’t have the means,” she said this week. “So we thought of this idea to help you know pay for the treatment. And like I said it’s going to be at least a year so at least to start, this is going to be an ongoing thing for us but we just wanted to start with this.”

Yazmin said Nicolas just spent 10 days in the hospital for his first round of chemotherapy. He’s back home now and will be there for a month.

“He’s doing OK, he’s doing so far so good,” she said.

The Mexican Hat is selling trays of four orders of enchiladas and sides on Saturday as a fundraiser. Trays cost $40 and all the money from the sales will go to the medical costs.

The trays must be pre-ordered and you can do that on the restaurant’s website or by calling the restaurant at 403-548-2366. You can pick your meal up from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday.

The Mexican Hat just celebrated its third anniversary last week and Yazmin and Mario thank everyone for the support.
